3 Things To Consider When Choosing New Countertops For Your Kitchen

If you’re looking to update the look and feel of your kitchen, replacing your countertops is a great place to start. However, making this big decision can be very challenging for some people, especially if you don’t know much about countertops to begin with.

For those who find themselves in this predicament, here are three things to consider when choosing new countertops for your kitchen.

Consistency Or Mix-and-Match

As you get ready to replace your countertops, there are quite a few decisions you’re going to have to make. One of those decisions, according to Alicia Garceau, a contributor to HGTV.com, is whether you want all of the countertops in your kitchen to be the same or if you’re wanting to mix-and-match a bit.

While choosing the same countertops for all of the counter surfaces in your kitchen will give your space a consistent and sophisticated look, choosing to mix-and-match with different colors or even styles of countertop could work better with your space or your personal style. For example, you may want your kitchen island to have a different countertop than over your cabinets, especially if you do a specific type of work in that space. So before you choose the exact materials you want, first think about how many materials you need to be picking.

Think About Maintenance Requirements

When you’re considering what materials you want your countertops to be made out of, you’re going to want to think about more than just the look and feel of the pieces. One big consideration is how much maintenance your chosen material will require.

According to Christine Chang Hanway, a contributor to Remodelista.com, materials like limestone, granite, and marble are porous and will all need to be resealed on a yearly basis. Additionally, if you have wood countertops, you’ll likely need to apply oil to them every six months or so. So if this is the type of maintenance that you don’t want to have to worry about, you might want to choose a lower maintenance material for your countertops.

Know How To Cut Down Your Costs

If you’re wanting to make your countertops the showpiece of your kitchen, there are ways that you can get something that you love looking at but that doesn’t cost you a fortune.

To do this, Grace Haynes, a contributor to Southern Living, suggests that you choose a material or stone that’s more common, as it will be easier to find and won’t be as expensive. Also, you could consider choosing quartz as the material. Since quartz countertops are man-made, they can often be found for at less expensive prices than other natural materials.

If you’re wanting to get new countertops for your kitchen, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you make the right choice for your space.
