4 Eco-Friendly Habits to Implement in 2023

The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to start looking at your habits and goals and think about what changes you might like to start making to improve your life in some way.

A major goal that many people choose to focus on is to increase their eco-efforts and become more environmentally friendly. The easiest way to make a change like this is to focus on small habits that are easy to implement and won’t feel too difficult. If you’d like to be more environmentally conscious in 2023, here are four simple habits to start incorporating.

Start Switching Your Products

Don’t try to throw away everything you own and switch to eco-friendly versions all at once – this is still wasteful! Instead, start becoming more conscious while you shop and slowly begin to replace the items you already use and own.

Begin by purchasing your produce from a farmers’ market instead of the plastic-wrapped options from a supermarket. Next, switch out your face wash for a cruelty-free, non-toxic version the next time yours runs out. Take it slowly until you’ve made significant changes. Even items in your home that need replacing can be swapped for earth-conscious versions – think environmentally friendly sofas and only using recycled plastics.

Greenify Your Plate

Another place to turn your focus is to your plate. Our diets play a huge role in our carbon footprint, and this makes them an easy target for making positive changes too.

Some habits you can incorporate are shopping and eating more in-season and becoming more mindful of waste. Plan your meals and make use of leftovers instead of throwing them away. You can also include a few meat-free meals into your weekly menu or even remove animal products from your diet entirely. It’s important to consider your health on a vegan diet and ensure you’re taking any supplements that might be necessary.

Reduce and Reuse

There are more ways than you think to reduce, reuse and recycle. Before throwing items away, see if they can be fixed or repurposed somehow. This can apply to clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances and other home goods.

A simple habit is to keep the empty glass and plastic jars from your pantry instead of throwing them away. These can be used to store leftovers in the fridge, to store random, loose items like hair ties, or even filled with homemade cookies and given as a gift to a friend!

Travel Smarter

Finally, try to implement the habit of being more conscious about your transportation. If you typically drive everywhere, consider choosing to ride a bike or take a walk to the destinations that are closer to your home. This is far better for the environment and will contribute to reducing noise pollution in your city too.

Walking more is also great for your health, and you’ll be saving money on gas and car maintenance costs (or paying for public transport), making this habit something that will benefit you in more ways than one!
