5 TIPS TO PAINTING A HOME
Paints add a splash of colour and vibrancy to your home and make it get a whole new look. Painting, however, is not as easy as it sounds or looks. The article below, therefore, contains some tips that you can use in order to do a good paint job. If you do not wish to do it yourself, you may contact your local painter who has the skills and expertise in doing the job for you and gets you the look you desire.
1. Clean up
Before commencing any paint job, ensure that you carry out some general cleaning first. Wipe out any dirt or grime that may be on the surfaces with a strong cleaning agent in order to have a smooth surface. This will ensure that once you paint over the surface, the paint will stick and you will have a smooth, clean and glossy finish. Remember to wipe off the dust on the doors, window panes and grills and on the sockets.
2. Prepare your surface
This comes in handy especially when you are renovating your home and want to do a paint job to add a vibrant look. Most times, the walls have chapped and rough surfaces as well as peeled off paint or wallpaper. Before doing any painting make sure you scrape the walls and sand them in order to get rid of any rough surfaces. Fill up the cracks too and flatten out any bumps or uneven surfaces. This preparation is very important since if you choose to just paint over your surface without going through this step then all these faults and more will definitely show through the paint.
3. Mix your paints beforehand
Have an estimate of all the amount of paint you require and mix all necessary combinations before you start painting. The reason for this is to avoid running out of paint in the middle of working on a wall then starting to prepare the paints in order to resume the job. Doing this causes you to have patches of colour of different shades on your walls which is not a pleasant sight.
4. Use a primer
In order to make your paint job really easy, ensure that you use a primer as an undercoat. The primer helps the paint to easily stick to the surface on which it is being brushed or rolled on. Primers also increase the lifespan of paint and help you save on paint costs since once you use a primer, then you will not have to use too much paint to get the job done efficiently.
5. Ensure you clear the room of as many things as possible
Painting can get messy and it is thus important to protect your stuff. Remove all the items that you are able to move, such as wall clocks, tables, vases, art paintings and sculptures, etc. Those which you can not move you may cover with a large piece of cloth which will protect them from any paint splashes or drips. Cover your floor with a canvas which will also take on any paint drips.
