How to Brighten a Room Without Sacrificing Bold or Dark Colors

Dark and bold colors are beautiful, for sure, and several of them might rank as your favorite colors. However, sometimes these colors can be challenging to your idea of perfect home décor. Why? Because dark colors can make a room seem smaller, especially when that color covers every wall in one room. Dark colors also retain heat, so one dark-colored room of your home might stay hotter than the others because of your palette choice. Luckily, there are a few ways you can brighten a room without sacrificing bold or dark colors.

Off-White Out the Ceilings

Your ceilings are significant spaces in your home. Your light fixtures and partial focal points are here, so an off-white tone will both brighten and visually expand a room. Never, ever black out your ceilings. Why off-white? Stark white can be blinding and have a negative impact on your vision. But off-white is softer and easier on your eyes, while being just the right amount of reflective to lighten dark-colored room walls.

Use Bright Trim to Offset Dark Colors

White is an excellent contrast color, but there are other bright colors, like yellow or light green, that would do well to offset and lighten the dark colors in a room. Look at your dark color choice and plan accordingly. You want colors that complement each other, while also providing an offset to keep the darker hue from taking over your room.

Use Different Shades of Your Favorite Dark, Bold Colors

One great way to brighten a room while still using dark, bold colors in your home décor is to paint 3 walls one shade and the fourth wall another shade. Pick colors that complement each other, like navy blue and turquoise, or crimson and apple red. Now pick your favorite, paint 3 walls with it, then paint the remaining wall with the remaining color. Voila—a beautiful, colorful room that is both bright and expansive.

Hang Bright Curtains and White Shades

Use accent décor to brighten a dark-colored room. For instance, cover the windows with white shades, then hang bright-colored curtains over the shades. Is your room dark blue? Lighter blue, like robin’s egg blue, curtains would do the trick. How about dark brown? Go for mocha, latte, or sand-colored curtains.

Dark and bold colors can really add depth and personality to your home décor. But a few offsetting brighter, lighter colors will help you keep a balanced design scheme throughout each room. When in doubt, rest assured you could find a contractor today with plenty to say on interior décor and color choice.
