Bring Back Letter Writing with Art Restart

About Art Restart

The Gathering Place (TGP) was founded in 1986 to give homeless women, their children and transgender individuals in Denver a safe place to go during the day. 30 years later, TGP is now the only daytime drop-in shelter offering services to this community. Those who seek assistance from The Gathering Place have access to a wide range of programs and services that meet basic needs, foster personal growth, and build community.

As part of our mission to motivate and assist these individuals in becoming self-sufficient, Art Restart was launched in 2014 as a Social Enterprise to give these women an opportunity to express themselves artistically while working toward their own financial independence. Art Restart provides members with the support and supplies they need to create their own art. Select pieces are then turned into custom merchandise from which the artists receive a royalty on every purchase made.

The origins of our program began in holiday and greetings cards serving as a socially conscious sentiment for friends, family, colleagues and clients. We are proud to have expanded our line into scarves, calendars, postcards and more. Depending on the product sold, artists receive between 5-50% royalties on every transaction. The remainder of the proceeds are reinvested back into TGP to help make the free services we provide to our members possible.

What We Thought

One thing I miss the most about my Grandma is her handwritten notes. It didn’t matter what anyone did for her, not a day would pass and she was writing them a thank you note. She had rheumatoid arthritis and holding an ink pen hurt her hands, her writing was often shaky and she made mistakes but none of those setbacks ever stopped her from writing a note.

When our first son was born not a holiday passed that she didn’t have my mom pick up a card for him and she quickly penned herself as Old Grandma to which he started to call her Oley. It was the sweetest and to her very last day she sent him cards and always included a card for me on every special occasion. I do not know over the course of my life with her how many cards I received but I treasure so many of them to this day.

I want to make sure that card and letter writing isn’t a dead art in our family and Art Restart is making that happen. The cards that I received to review are stunning and I have a perfect person assigned to each of them. I love that these cards are designed by women who may have struggles in their daily lives, but they aren’t letting that interfere with their love of art.

Something else I love is that the more I buy the better deal I get so I can stock up and save money at the same time while supporting a cause that has become very dear to my heart. If you remember a few weeks ago we did an editorial about Art Restart and The Gathering Place and since then I have really fallen in love with this cause and everything it stands for.
