About Freeloader

We are two firefighter dads dedicated to changing the way families travel together and get to see the world.

Our story really began when we tried to share our love for the outdoors with our kids and realized how inadequate existing child carriers were for what we needed. We wanted to take our kids outdoors, but we didn’t want to pack our little ones in with our trail-mix. We wanted to share the adventure with them and still take it at their pace.

So we set out to create an easy-to-use, portable child carrier that allowed us to travel and hike with our little ones and carry them whenever they wanted. It was essential to us that the Freeloader be lightweight and portable because ultimately we wanted to provide a much less clumsy alternative to the stroller or the traditional hiking carrier for a parent’s day out.

What We Thought-

Our 4 year old weighs 42 lbs and I am a smaller stature parent (okay I am short!) and have a terrible time carrying him when we want to go places but suddenly he finds that his legs are just too tired to keep going. As a family we love being outdoors and now that we have 2 kids I really questioned how we would carry both of them when we wanted to take a hike or just do a walk in the woods nearby. When the Freeloader arrived I questioned no more. I knew that this would be comfortable for both myself and for Jack.

I did have some questions though and those were quickly answered on our first adventure. I wondered if I would feel top heavy or unable to walk due to his size and mine. This was absolutely no issue at all. I also wondered how easy it would be for Jack to get on and off of it and also if I would be able to stand up from a squatting position with him on my back. 40+ pounds is no joke and I seriously doubted myself. Neither of the mentioned was a problem at all.

The Freeloader is some of our favorite gear. Check out our other blog posts about outdoor gear for more ideas!

I have photos to upload of our adventures as soon as they are edited and guys, you will see how great this product is.

So I know you want to know what this product costs and where to get one– the Freeloader has their own online store where you can purchase one for $299.99.  We are adding this product to the 2017 Holiday Gift Guide as well because it makes a great gift for any parent or childcare provider who loves being outdoors with their little ones!!
