Getting the Freshest Meals Possible

Getting the Freshest Meals Possible

We live in a world where we hear a lot about artificial ingredients and foods made with GMO’s and other things that often make us raise our eyebrows. We all want to make sure we are practicing great food safety when preparing foods at home but at the end of the day we want to know some information behind the foods we are preparing.

For us I like to get foods from a local butcher and in some areas there are great butchers such as butcher shop Sarasota where you can get great quality meats.

Another means of getting fresh foods is by growing your own vegetables or having your own backyard chickens. We like to do both.

Often if time or space is an issue there are always farmer’s markets where you can really get your hands on some amazing fresh produce and other great homemade products, too. One of my favorite things to get at a local market is homemade jams and jelly when I can’t make my own due to time restraints. Raising 2 boys is best described by a meme I saw on the internet “raising boys is a walk in the park… Jurassic Park”.

But anyway… back to my idea of having the freshest meals on the table here. I feel that knowing where our food comes from that I am providing a great experience for our boys and they are learning right along with us that it is an amazing thing to source your own foods.

In the past few years we have used a local butcher for processing a beef and also a pig. I know this doesn’t appeal to everyone, but it works for us. We can do this 1 time a year and while the cost is a lot at one time the prices are amazing when you divide everything out and the meat is super local for us (raised within 5 miles of our home) by a trusted friend and farmer who feeds them just the right things to make sure that they are both pampered and that the meat tastes great.

We use a vacuum sealer a lot to process vegetables and fruits for freezing. I used to can more but again… 2 boys… and now I like to vacuum seal things. I love opening up my freezer in the dead of winter and pulling out a package of fresh from the garden corn on the cob. There is just something special to me about that. Better yet fresh fruit to make a pie that would have been seasonal several months ago. Makes our holiday meals extra special, but that is another post.

If you are looking to follow us and our “different” way of life be sure to check out other posts on Product Review Cafe and also feel free to share your ideas on how you get the best meals possible for your family. Every family is different and while super local may work for us, others may find that meal delivery services work for them. That is what makes the internet one of my favorite places. There are so many ideas and ways that things work for people.
