Throughout my life I have had many different dogs, but the ones I have had since being an adult and out on my own have meant something totally different. My dogs were companions, company, like children to myself and my husband before we had our own children. In the last year we lost 3 dogs, 2 of which we had well before having children.

Most recently after losing the 2 German Shepherds we knew we wanted another dog. At the time we still had Buddy who was a companion to our boys. Our local shelter posted a dog and I knew she had to be mine. Her name was Athena and she was my dream breed; a Blue Heeler. Athena came straight to me when we arrived at the shelter. She sat at my feet and her eyes melted my heart. She had not been there long but unfortunately due to deployment she had been surrendered as well as her sister.

Athena came home with us, but I wanted our boys to understand the importance of adopting pets from the animal shelter. Getting dogs out of shelters often saves their lives. It brings them a new life and the devotion and thankfulness of a shelter dog is something that I can’t easily find the words for.

Several weeks after getting Athena we unfortunately lost Buddy. It was devastating to our home especially the circumstances but I felt that Athena was placed in our lives for a huge reason and that reason was known as she sat and licked my face as I was crying, she accompanied our boys through some hard life events that they were not prepared for and she has been here for us ever since.

Anyway, the book Miss Olive Finds Her Furever Home entered our home at just the right time. A time when I was explaining to the boys the importance of shelter dogs and the importance of loving every creature. They have adored this book and it is one that I love reading although I admit that it made my eyes leak the first time we read it together. Our oldest asked why I was crying and I told him I was just so happy for Miss Olive.
