My Nutrisystem Weight Loss Journey Week 1 Here we go

 Monday December 17th, 2012  was a big day for me!  My first day on the Nutrisystem program. Was I Scared? Yup !  Why?  Well, let’s just say that I am queen of knowing what to do, but not doing it. For about 4 years, ever since I quit smoking, I have struggled to lose a pound.  For the most part I was able to stop gaining, but I sure was not able to lose.  I know what I was doing wrong. Everything. My eating habits were horrible.
Here is how a typical day would go … Â Coffee, Coffee, Coffee, HUGE dinner (because by then I was starving) and a snack. Once I quit smoking, it was even worse… Coffee, Snack, Coffee, Snack, Lunch, Coffee, Snack, Dinner, Snack. Â Now yes, Â it is more healthy to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day, but not when it consists of sugary, fatty snacks. Â I was using the snacks to keep me occupied so I was not concentrating on the bad habit I was kicking. Â After about a year I had kicked smoking completely and now to work on losing what I had gained in its place.
I figured that because I knew all of the DO’s and Dont’s of “dieting” that it would be easy and I would have no problem at all. Wrong.  Regardless of the knowledge I had, I could not do it.  I would start off ok, but sooner than later I would just fall out of it. The hardest part was providing home cooked meals for a family of 4 that were healthy for me and still satisfying for them.  There was always a complaint. I started out by changing out our butter and oils, switching from white to wheat and serving smaller portions. When I made something they didn’t like it was very discouraging and instead I would make them a meal and something different for myself.  That failed because I was always more interested in what they were having. Sigh!
So here I am 4 yrs later , FINALLY getting the chance to try something that I know and feel in my heart will work,  Nutrisystem!  I have always seen the commercials and told my husband “See, that is what I need, meals are already prepared and portioned containing the amount of  calories, fat, protein and fiber that is healthy”.  The only way I can do this is to have a structured plan.
My first order came with an information guide, monthly tracker and a water bottle. I was able to order 28 dinners, 14 breakfasts, 14 snacks and 14 lunches. The remaining days come as frozen meals pre-selected by Nutrisystem. I was nervous that the food would taste horrible and be such small portions that I would be completely disappointed, but I was so wrong. Â I remember the first thing I had was the Breakfast Burrito, I chose that because I was trying to make sure to eat something hearty to start the day in hopes that it would help keep me full. Â I was so afraid to be hungry all day and not be able to stick to the plan. The burrito was so good. It was hearty and I did feel full, I was surprised at how much so. Â By the end of the day all of the high fiber and protein in the meals had me feeling as if I had too much to eat! Â Yay!
The rest of the week was kind of trial and error, finding out what I like and do not like. I noticed that the dinners were a great portion size , especially when paired with a double serving of non starchy vegetables! Â A full plate of satisfying food is a great thing to see when you are on a “diet”. Â I quote diet because the best part about Nutrisystem is that it is not a diet, it is a life style change, teaching me to decrease my portions and eat high fiber and low calorie.
By the end of week one I did not feel deprived of anything and I lost 4 lbs! It might have been a little more if my daily activity was higher and Christmas Eve/Christmas were not upon us. Â Problem is, I work from home online and I have to find creative ways to get exercise, like tromping around the yard in my rubber boots through the snow with the dog or running up and down the stairs a hundred times! Â All in all I am completely satisfied, excited and on track to hit my goal by April !

Applause to you, one for recognizing you needed a better plan and two for sticking to it, you can do this and in the end you will feel so much better, good luck!
