New Year; New Business
Many people begin a new year with the ideas for new business ventures that they would like to begin. For myself this year is all about expanding on a business that we already have; that’s right that is this very blog.
When I began blogging 7 years ago I never thought the business would be where it is today with a business partner and partnerships with so many great clients that I have made great relationships with.
Now many people say to day ask me how I started this blog and how I have made it into my career. The answer to that is so vast that it is hard to explain, but simply put it has taken time. Time for building and growing, but also time away from my family when I would have rather been doing anything other than sitting in front of a computer. I have gotten to a point now though where my life and work life can be totally separate and I can work when I have the time.
The advice that I have to offer anyone who is looking to start a blog as a business instead of a hobby is that you should expect to devote just as much if not more time to your blog than you do your 9-5 job. I have found myself up early in the morning hours writing away, sending notes to clients and getting working relationships started/progressing only to sleep a few hours and be back up doing it again. This business isn’t for the faint of heart sometimes.
Andrew Charlton is one of my go-to business people when I want to read more about how certain business’ work and function. Charlton displays in an article how people are worried that machines (robots) are going to take away jobs in the future, but as he states this will not lead to mass unemployment. Many people fear their jobs will be taken away due to machines and they look to other means of making money to support their families, such as blogging or other virtual jobs that require a real person. I have never feared that a robot will take over my job, but I can see how certain professions would fear this. It simply just doesn’t seem like a reality that is going to happen anytime soon.
