Outgrowing Your Home Due to Virtual Work
2020 has proven that we have had to become even more thrifty with what we have and often it has shown that we were not at home nearly enough due to career or other obligations. This year we learned that maybe our home is a bit too small which led to some day dreaming about what it would be like to own a home with *gasp* an actual office.
As many of you know we already homeschooled prior to the virtual schooling distance learning debacle that has become the pain in many parents unmentionable area. I spoke with a lot of parents who were stressing the idea that they were not only working from home in a split second decision but they were also forced into distance learning with their kids at the same time. While I pride myself on my ability to do both I had a lot of time to prep. In January I will mark 11 years of working from home and we have homeschooled for 4 of those.
I started to think that maybe even we needed more space. Our 3 bedroom ranch just may not be enough especially as our boys grow and want more space to roam and will also need more space for their belongings and to do their school work. Mortgage Calculators helped me in a tremendous way. I learned that there was a calculator where I could put in the price of homes as well as our other bills to know what we could afford. I also love how simple this was especially for someone like myself who learned early in life that math was not my finest subject.
Google was my friend when I simply needed to know what the average space needed for a family of 4 actually was. The recommendation is 2400 square feet. I like knowing this simply because I can narrow down the search a LOT with information like this. I also got a national average for what those homes would cost and found that we were well within budget for them as well thanks to the amazing Mortgage Calculator.
While we may be completely happy and settled right now there are many times I wish we had more land to roam and also more space inside our home to do some things as well. Having great information at our disposal when the time comes to make a move will be super helpful. For now we will continue to daydream and one day hope to spread our wings a little more. Until then we will live in close contact with each other and enjoy being our own version of sardines in a can.
