One challenge for my family is finding a game that engages all my children. Games that the older boys find entertaining tend to be too difficult for my five-year-old daughter to be able to enjoy with them. Alternatively, a game that my youngest finds entertaining is a little too boring to engage my older two. My kids opened Mr. Bucket on Christmas morning and they could not wait to get the pieces out and assemble it. Assembly was easy enough that my ten-year-old son took care of that as I located batteries to install. It was assembled in a matter of minutes and they were ready to play! Mr. Bucket works best on a large, flat surface. We decided we’d give it a shot on our wood kitchen floor.
(Pictured above is my youngest, Molleigh, who decided she needed to bend the “no hands” rule just a little. As she continued to play she eventually quit using her other hand to scoop the balls.)
The bucket spins, slides and turns around the floor and uses quite a bit of space. The bigger the play area, the better. We live in a VERY old, remodeled home and the wood floor isn’t quite level so instead of chasing balls in all different directions, we ended up with all the balls rolling in the same direction down the floor where the slope is. We decided to give our area rug in the living room a try. It isn’t a fluffy rug so it allowed for the bucket to roll around. It only slowed Mr. Bucket down a bit. It still rolled and spun while spitting balls everywhere. Our only obstacle in the living room was keeping the balls from rolling under the couch as Mr. Bucket spit them out!
Overall, Mr. Bucket is the perfect game for long winter days when it’s too cold to get outside to burn off some energy. The game inspires children to get up and get moving! My kids had a blast chasing the balls around the floor while the bucket spit them out nearly as fast as they could scoop them up. I heard loads of laughter and watched three of my children play together for twenty minutes with no arguing. THAT is a win in this mama’s book! It’s a game that’s easy enough for the youngest player but still challenging even for the older child.
