Tips to Throwing a Great Summer Party
by Alek Sabin
Summer just wouldn’t be summer without the backyard parties. The great thing about summer parties, too, is that they’re pretty simple. Indeed, just grilling up some good eats and inviting your friends can already make for a good time. However, if you want to take your summer party, there are all kinds of ways to do it! You could try throwing a themed party, or you could get a portable screen and projector and have your own outdoor movie night. The possibilities are basically endless. However, regardless of what summer party you’re planning to throw, here are some tips that can help you make it the perfect time for you and your guests…
Have a Comfortable Outdoor Space
In the midst of summer, nobody wants a party that’s totally indoors. You should take advantage of the warmer season and ensure that there is a great area outdoors for people to hang out, relax, and party in. If you have a backyard or any sort of yard at all, then you’ve already won half of the battle. However, you should try to maximize that space for it to be even more comfortable.
If you have lots of green space and lawn, then set up tables and seating out there to make it convenient for people. Alternatively, you could leave that space more open and use your patio as a gathering space. Just make sure that your patio is set up for people to really use and enjoy. Here’s a good article that demonstrates patio options that can tie your yard together!
Have “Themed” Drinks, Snacks, and Decor
Any summer party is bound to be a good time, but if you want to make something more memorable, a great way to do that is to pick a theme that is going to tie everything together. In a way, we do this every year on the 4th of July, but you don’t have to wait for a holiday to have a themed party.
Your theme could be highly specific, such as picking a popular film or decade (80’s parties are always a hit). Your theme could also be more general, maybe you just want to throw a more high-class party where people dress up and have wine tastings (you could even take a wine tasting class so you can share your knowledge). Regardless of your theme, once you have picked it, stick to it! Make sure that your decor, snacks, and drinks all play a part in the theme, as it will help get everyone into the party.
Make the Food Easy to Eat
At backyard parties, people tend to be moving around a lot. Even though you should provide seating, lots of people may even prefer to stand. As such, you should make sure that the food to eat is convenient for people. Even if you have a main entree that people will need to sit down and eat, there should be plenty of snacks and finger foods that people grab and enjoy at will, without having to feel tied down to their seats. Fruits & veggies are a great way to do this, but you could even make kebobs or finger-sized desserts if you want more options.
Repell the Bugs
The one thing that can suck about having an outdoor party in the summertime is that you’re not the only living creatures that think it’s a great time to be out and about. Mosquitos and other insects are liable to be out and active, especially as the sun starts to set. To help fix this problem, you can put plants in your yard’s landscaping that are specifically meant to repel those unwanted guests. Mint and lavender plants actually work to naturally keep mosquitos away and will make the ones that are there less likely to bite people, due to the fact that they mask the scent and make it harder for them to find food.
