Supporting the Mental Health of an Ageing Family Member

If you feel as though your elderly family member isn’t feeling quite as cheerful as they once were, or if you feel as though you need to make some changes to try and give them a bit more support regularly, then this guide will tell you what you can do to try and help them get that, without compromising your own mental health in the meantime.

Regular Check-ins

One of the main things you need to do is try to make sure that you are giving them regular check-ins. You need to have a consistent schedule for them so that you can give them some good emotional support whenever it may be required. When they are talking, make sure that you make it clear that their opinions aren’t just valued, but also significant. If you can make sure that they are valued and that they are also feeling heard, then this will work wonders for their mental health.

Eating and Drinking Well

It’s so important that you eat and drink well, and make sure that your family member does the same. If you don’t ensure things like this, then you may find that you end up struggling to keep their mental health stable, as diet can have a huge impact on it. If your loved one is in a nursing home, now would be the time to look into dehydration from nursing home neglect, because if they are not being offered regular drinks, and if they are not being taken care of as much as they could be, then this could have huge consequences for their mental health as well. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to make sure that you’re continually monitoring them, and that you are taking action should you feel as though their physical health is not being prioritised.

Mindfulness

Simple meditation or even breathing techniques can be a good way for you to help people to manage any stress and anxiety that they may be experiencing. Breathing techniques and meditation can be a good way for you to help your loved one to not only feel good about themselves, but also see the situations they face with more clarity. If you can focus on things like this, then you will find it easier to not only make sure that they are being taken care of, but also to make sure that you are taking steps to try and build them a solid foundation when it comes to their mental health, which is everything.

Encouraging your loved one to keep a diary is also so important. If you can encourage them to keep a diary, then this allows you to see when they might be struggling and what you can do to try to alleviate these feelings. Writing down things in itself can be its own therapy, which is great to say the least. If you can make sure that they always have a pen and paper, they’ll be able to do it in their own time.
