Over time our homes can lose that sparkly ‘freshly decorated’ look. You can end up with areas of clutter, chips stains and overall a space that feels like it needs updating. If you’re looking to bring a new lease of life to your home, here are a few things to try.
While this is likely to be a big expense, it’s one of the upgrades in your home that’s so worth doing. Nothing will bring down the overall look quicker than old flooring that’s past it’s best. Laminates can become chipped and warped, and old carpets can harbour smells and stains after years of being trampled on by shoes and pets. Revive your home by ripping everything out and starting again. Easy to clean surfaces like wood, tile and vinyl are best suited for high traffic downstairs spaces. Soft and plush carpets are better reserved for bedrooms, it makes them extra cosy. Check out sites like Empire Floors who have a range of different floor coverings in one place.
Update The Colour Scheme
This is a surefire way to get your home feeling fresh and new again. It will make everywhere look much cleaner and depending on the colours you choose, more spacious and modern too. Light shades for walls are always a good option, even if you’re a fan of deep and vivid shades there are ways to incorporate them without putting them on the walls. For example, neutral coloured walls will go with any other colour- so you could bring in colour with curtains, rugs, throws, cushions, lamps and flowers. For your accent colour you could bring in another neutral

Upcycle The Furniture
Old furniture might look worn and past its best, but it doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy everything brand new. Many pieces can be upcycled like this to give them a new fresh and modern look, a coat of matte paint and some new handles can do absolute wonders and really revive your rooms. It’s a lot cheaper and gives you more use from your furniture which is always a good thing if the overall piece still performs well. You could go with white chalk paint and slightly sand the edges for a gorgeous worn shabby chic finish, or go with a colour like grey which is very on trend in homes right now. The good thing about this is you can easily change it again later down the line if you wanted, with another coat of paint. Along with pieces of furniture you can also upcycle things like kitchen cupboard doors. If they’re made from solid wood simply sand, prime and paint them the colour of your choice. If you have veneer coverings on your cupboard doors, you can actually scrape this off and paint the wood underneath. Use a paint designed for kitchen cupboards which will be hardwearing against the splashes and spills of the kitchen.
Update Your Fixtures
When it comes to the overall look of your home, the small touches make more of a difference than you’d expect. So updating things like light sockets and plug sockets to new chrome ones will give your home a much more coherent feel. The same applies to door handles and drawer handles, they’re a great way to bring a fresh new look to the room. Another great way to update your home, make it feel new as well as make it look more expensive is to change the taps. Even an inexpensive kitchen sink or basic bathroom suite will look like you spent a lot more money on it with a beautiful set of taps. Don’t be put off doing these kinds of things if you’re renting, providing you keep the original fixtures you could always take them with you to a new property if you moved again in the future.
Have a Deep Clean and Declutter
Finally, regularly deep cleaning and decluttering is always a good idea. In fact, this is one way to make your home look like new without even doing anything else. We all have areas in our home that are prone to accumulating junk, whether it’s a kitchen drawer or a side table by the front door. Declutter and deep clean everywhere for the best possible finish- don’t forget things like skirting boards, behind furniture and on windowsills. Washing all of your curtains, throws and cushion covers too will make everything feel nice and fresh- basically all of the jobs that you wouldn’t normally do on your regular daily clean up. With everything clean, decluttered and organised you’ll be left feeling much lighter and your home will look fresh and new again.
