Why Protect your Dogs from Fleas & Ticks

We love our pets and want to protect them from things that make them itchy and scratchy, but there are more reasons than just comfort to protect them from fleas and ticks.

Fleas and ticks are pesky and once they are in your home they are incredibly hard to get rid of. They can also pose health risks to your pets.

Fleas cause a lot of itching and can produce hot spots on dogs which can lead to infections of the skin. Fleas while small in size have been known to take so much blood from dogs that they become anemic (this happens mostly in puppies).

Fleas also can cause flea tapeworms and a host of other health problems including “rabbit fever” which can cause fever and lethargy which is rare but absolutely possible.

A known fact is that fleas can live without blood for 100 days, so well after a pet is gone from the home the fleas may still produce problems.

While fleas are annoying and can pose issues for both humans and animals I love knowing that our dogs are protected from ticks. These vary by region but we are unfortunate to have a lot of varieties here in Virginia and they are all disgusting. Each has their own issues and health worries including one tick that can bite humans and leave them allergic to meats.

Tick bites in dogs can leave them with difficulty breathing, trouble chewing and swallowing and weakened hind legs.

I find myself constantly checking our dogs for ticks even though I know they are fully protected with their topical treatments. Ticks just make me worry the most as a dog mom.

Most recently we have started to use Onguard Flea & Tick Treatment for our dogs. I love that they come in 6 packs for 6 full months of treatment for $54.99. Right now has some specials for 50% off select items and they also offer autoship specials. They also offer free shipping on orders $49 or more.

More about Onguard Flea & Tick Treatment:

Onguard Flea & Tick Treatment for Dogs offers an effective and convenient way to keep your pup protected from pests. This fast-acting topical treatment kills all life stages of fleas and ticks on dogs at least 8 weeks old and ranging from 23 to 44 pounds, and helps control infestations of chewing lice and sarcoptic mange mites. With the same active ingredients as FRONTLINE Plus—fipronil and (S)-methoprene—Onguard breaks the flea life cycle and rids your pet of fleas that can cause flea allergy dermatitis. Not only does it wipe out adult fleas, but it keeps new eggs from hatching. This powerful formula keeps killing Brown dog ticks, American dog ticks, Lone Star ticks and Deer ticks that may carry Lyme disease for up to a month. Application is easy—just squeeze this spot treatment onto your pup’s skin between the shoulder blades. Onguard is long-lasting and waterproof, so it still offers protection even after a bath or if your pup gets caught in the rain.

We found this so easy to apply to Buddy and love that he is fully protected, not itchy and we have no issues to worry about as far as the Lone Star tick getting on him or him bringing them into our home either. Buddy can still take a swim 24 hours after application too which is something he loves.
