Working on a ship for several months has its challenges that you would not encounter in a land-based job. When you are working aboard a ship courtesy of a seafarer manning agency in the Philippines, you are miles away not only from your family. You are also miles away from convenience.
Despite the difficulties, many people still long for a career in the open sea for various reasons. Back then, most people opted to work on a ship because it entailed a high possibility of becoming rich instantly, especially if you are working for a crew of treasure hunters. But now, people want this kind of career because it entails getting to travel the world, good wages and long holidays.
If this is the kind of career you want for yourself, hopefully you will be able to join a crew right away. But before you send out your resume to every ship you can find, it is important that you know what to bring along on your journey. Here are a few tips to remember when you are packing for your voyage into the deep blue sea.
Lots of shirts, pants and shoes
Obviously, you need to bring as many clothes as you can because you will be at sea for a very long time. But this does not mean that once you are aboard a ship, it is against the rules to wash your dirty clothes. It only means that you might be too busy sometimes to wash them or you might be too tired by the end of your shift to clean your clothes.
So, you have to schedule your wash day on a particular day where you do not have to do much. This way, you will have all the energy you need to scrub your clothes clean.
You also have to take into account that there will be days where it is close to freezing, so you need to have clothes that will keep you warm. Bring a lot of sweaters, gloves (wool gloves are the most effective in keeping your hands warm), as well as underpants and undershirts that will keep you warm.
Medicines and vitamins
You also need to bring your vitamins and medicines at all times. Although every ship comes with a medical staff prepared to address any medical concern, you should still bring your vitamins and medicines to keep your body healthy while you are at sea.
There will be times when you will not be doing much in the ship, so you need to bring along a few items to keep yourself busy. Bring your mobile phone, laptop or any other gadget to keep your mind busy. These will also allow you to communicate with your loved ones.
These are just some of the tips that you need to remember if you are about to pack your bags for your career at sea. Pack all that you can and leave those that you do not need, and hopefully, you will enjoy your time working on board a ship.
