Free Online Math Games from Calculators.org
Lately we have all been learning of ways to keep our kids entertained and while I fully admit that we have watched more television than usual and played more video games than I ever imagined I still look for ways to keep the school skills sharp. As many of you know we already homeschool and have for several years. Our boys have actually never stepped foot in a public school and I am grateful for the opportunity to stay home with them while my husband works outside of the home and I work from home.
The schooling websites that we typically use have been slammed with new students due to the Covid-19 pandemic and this often makes it hard for Jack to log in when he is used to doing his work. Jack and I are really big on routines and this has truly thrown us for a loop.
Either way, recently I learned of a great website called calculators.org where we can sit together and play math games. We have actually even found some that Willie enjoys and for that I am thankful.
These are ad-free games which is something I absolutely enjoy. Many apps have so many ads I feel that we forget what we are doing long before the games resume. With calculators.org we just focus on what we want to work on. We also were not required to “sign up” for anything which honestly means less spammy emails with information we don’t need. Straight to the point, we get on the computer and do the math games and are able to leave with no commitment or obligations.
I want to share some of our favorites:
Math Game for Kids is seriously fun! It brings something that Jack loves (cars) and math together in a fast paced math game. We love the speed challenge of this game and find that Jack really excels when given a challenge like that. Pretty simply put he works best under pressure just as I do. I remember doing speed drills in school myself and this is a great way to exercise the mind.
Zombie Number allows us to focus on a certain topic or random. We are mostly working on addition and subtraction since Jack is only in first grade but this resource can grow with him as he entertains new math concepts. I love that this lets Jack be a typical boy and lets me be that famous “boy mom” while really brushing up on these skills!
Overall I find that calculators.org has something for everyone and we have been able to play this as a family. Jack seems to enjoy it and I am finding that it works on both my iPad tablet and also my laptop. Jack loves the games and we have been able to branch out in even a short amount of time. He laughed out loud and we had a stress-free time using these games which is something we all need in these trying times.
If you are looking for fun activities to accompany math homework that has been sent home, I highly suggest this! It seems to cover a variety of topics and grade levels.
Keep your eyes peeled for more homeschooling topics in the coming days and weeks. Remember, we are all in this together.
